Taking the driving seat, with Derriere Equestrian Sponsored Event Rider Daisy Berkeley

Taking the driving seat, with Daisy Berkeley

Our ambassador rider, eventer Daisy Berkeley, has had a busy spring, taking out her rising seven year olds NPS Devon, Electoral Role and Caroline to some high profile horse trials events. She has a promising string of youngsters that she is currently producing, and landed a rewarding first place in the BE100 with Electoral Role at Tweseldown earlier this month.

Daisy is an incredibly experienced eventer, having contested many world class events, and being a former British Open Champion and winner at the prestigious Blenheim horse trials. A British eventing team stalwart, Daisy has medals in all three colours from the European and World Championships, as well as the Olympics.

So we asked her, as a Derriere Equestrian Ambassador, to share with our friends, customers and followers the essence of the event rider’s secret weapon - the driving seat.

The riding seat can be used to amplify the horse’s own motion,” Daisy explains. “By adding your riding seat to the horse's motion, you can influence his speed, especially ‘up the gears’. The driving seat asks for more stride, and more impulsion - immeasurably useful for covering ground to make up time, reaching a finish line, or helping the horse ‘lock on’ to a fence with impulsion, if your pace has been more ‘pedestrian’, due to the terrain or the getaway from the previous fence,” Daisy explains.

“You are essentially using your riding seat in a forward motion, sitting in the saddle (as opposed to using a light seat), and rotating the pelvic forward in a circle that matches the horse’s rhythm. The key is to ‘catch’ the horse’s rhythm, so your seat encourages him forward just as one of his forelegs appears to come back, just before it lifts from the ground; easily seen by his shoulder rotating. I say ‘one of’ the limbs, without mentioning a leading leg, assuming that we are considering a wide-open cross country course - if you’re seeking impulsion in an arena, try to catch the inside foreleg as it comes back, as the outside hind can then be influenced in the canter stride. Think of your seat as bringing the hind end of the horse forward with a longer stride underneath its rib cage. Remember, we don’t want to be excessively kicking and demanding with our legs, so the seat can be a really useful aid, allowing for more subtle leg aids.”

Daisy says that a key part of understanding this aid is to also know when to ‘stop’ driving. “When you need to ‘hold’ the horse’s pace and impulsion, you can strengthen your stomach muscles and straighten your back a little, lifting the shoulders at the same time - this has the effect of slowing the pace, even for a moment.”

Remember that when the rider is comfortable within the saddle, they can move more easily with the horse’s gait. Comfortable underwear and breeches are a must.

Derriere underwear is fabulous; discreet and verycomfortable,” Daisy says. “The breeches are extremely smart and very flattering. Bear in mind also that a good sports bra is essential, in order to both carry and open the shoulders, and not focus on any discomfort caused by breast movement,” Daisy concludes.

Derriere Equestrian, The World's Leading Equestrian Underwear Experts Announce The Launch Of The New De Sportief Sports Bra

Derriere Equestrian, The World's Leading Equestrian Underwear Experts Announce The Launch Of The New De Sportief Sports Bra

Derriere Equestrian announce the highly anticipated new product launch of its sports bra. The launch expands on the signature range of its specialist Equestrian base wear. In January 2017, the new De Sportief bra went into production with a creative, high end brand ethos, mirroring the precise & exceptional fit of the core range. The official launch hit the catwalk in a blaze of publicity at the BETA International trade fair at the NEC and at SPOGA Horse Cologne in February.

Unique design aspects of the bra present it as a world first due to bespoke elements. Specifically crafted to meet the needs of the high impact nature of equestrian sports, the elements include a low, wide torso band which sits deeper than the average sports bra to give thoracic core support, while the angled padded straps are designed to alleviate neck and shoulder pain. The garment has the finish of luxury lingerie, something lacking in the sector today.

The launch offers a buying choice for women involved in the wider market of high impact sporting activity including running, aerobics, hiit, circuits and gym work. Claire Galer is the creative force that revolutionised the equestrian underwear landscape and took it far outside the long accepted norm. The company paved the way for luxury with comfort at its core, coining the phrase 'function at its most lavish.’

Claire comments. “We are delighted to have brought to the equestrian and sports market a bra that is set to revolutionise sportswear, the feedback we have received at launch through BETA and SPOGA Horse has been overwhelming. We have spent two years designing, prototyping and performance testing the style. The result is an innovative product positioned at the forefront in breast control for sports exertion. The DE Sportief is the style for the future, a fusion of compression and encapsulation creating the perfect hybrid design in sports bra technology. Derriere Equestrian is known globally for quality, style and performance, and demand for the DE Sportief has already grown at a phenomenal rate, we are excited to see completion of first production with our team and have already moved forward into second production.

Like all Derriere Equestrian undergarments, the racer-back-style Derriere Sportief Bra with padded straps features completely seamless areas, to minimise rubbing - the cup areas are therefore super-comfortable and soft to the touch. It offers full zipped entry for easy access - so no more getting ‘stuck’ when you try to remove your sports bra after a hot training session! As you’d expect from Derriere, a fashion-focussed product in a stunning colourway that you will be proud to show off at your exercise class or gym - the Sportief is no shrinking violet! Remember too that if you do choose to ride in a ‘normal’ bra that the standard strap formation can be extremely inconvenient and annoying, if the straps fall down beneath a show shirt, stock and jacket! So the racer-style is practical too

Derriere Equestrian Product Review

Derriere Equestrian product Review                  March 2017

As soon as I heard about Derriere and their equestrian underwear I was desperate to get my hands on a pair of the well spoken panties. It took me a while to choose which style to go for; I have never ridden in a padded panty before, and to be honest, at first it seemed strange to me as I thought they would feel odd and not look flattering; so i decided to play it safe and got for the Performance Panty in nude so I could wear them with white breeches out competing. I can honestly say that they are the comfiest pair of underwear I have ever ridden in. In the past I have found it difficult to source the right colour underwear whilst wearing white breeches, they would always seem to show threw whichever colour I chose. My nude Derriere’s are the only colour underwear I have found which I do not have this problem with, perfect for anyone wanting to wear white breeches! Another problem I have previously had would be the dreaded VPL line….. (visible pant line) definiently the most unflattering problem any rider could ask for! I decided to go a size up in my Derriere’s so this problem would not occur, but to be honest due to the specifically placed stitching either your true size or a size up would both be just as comfortable and look just as good.

A few Performance Panty purchases later, I decided to buy the Derriere G…. definitely a brilliant decision! After falling in love with my super soft Performance Panty I thought I’d give the G-String a go; I had doubts about wether anything would be more comfortable than my current Derriere’s but I seemed to prove myself wrong! They are by far the most comfortable g-string I have ridden in, extra soft and fitted; perfect for competitions as you are certain to be VPL free;) I chose to go with my true size in this design, and they fit perfectly!

Overall, both the Performance Panty and Derriere G have full recommendations from myself. They are the perfect riding underwear for competitions, training or for riding at home in.

When buying your Derriere’s, wether it be your first pair, or tenth, don’t hesitate to buy more than just the one pair, the more the merrier! Especially for those competing at three day events or stay over shows like myself, you don’t want to run out of your comfiest underwear which helps your look and perform at your best.

A bit about myself….

I am a 15 year old pony event rider based in Wiltshire who owns two rides, Ech Na Sliabh who I currently compete on at pony trails (BE novice) and BS pony fox hunter, throughout the season we competed up and down the country at Pony Club, NSEA and BE events. Main titles include coming second in the PC championship intermediate eventing, ninth at the PC championship in the intermediate showjumping, second in our first U18 novice, eighth in our first pony open novice, reserve champion at the NSEA championship, and finsishing 2016 by qualifying for the Blue Chip championships in the pony fox hunter. My young ride, Little George will be competing at BE100 this season along with BS pony fox hunter.

A Business Of Show

The Business of Show

The winter trade show season is now complete and was a resounding success for DerriereEquestrian. The Team headed off to the UK’s British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) International (22-24 Jan), followed by SPOGA Horse (5-7 Feb). These industry trade shows offer us a thrilling opportunity to meet retailers and buyers face to face, and to showcase our range of ergonomic, sporting riding underwear and breeches to interested parties. You can’t beat touching a product, stretching it to assess its malleable properties, stroking the tactile material, checking out the manufacturing quality, and examining the dimensions and sizing - this gives store owners, buyers and distributors the chance to see the Derriere Difference - a superior product that is a market leader! So we welcome the chance to invite interested parties onto our striking purple exhibition stand for a drink and chat at both trade shows, to discuss stocking our innovative range.

So what can retailers expect when they peruse the latest ranges from Derriere? Derriere Equestrian is without doubt the first equestrianundergarment rage to provide effective, stylish riding underwear. No bulky seam-lines, or stitching on the seam-lines where rubbing can occur! We use wicking materials with bacteriostatic properties, and of course padding is a unique selling point of Derriere’s range. We use breathable fabrics and yarns, eradicating the adverse effects of materials that absorb perspiration, causing chaffing and irritation to the skin. Importantly, our underwear is ergonomically and scientifically designed, ensuring no fabric edges will interfere with the anatomical proportions of the rider’s body where there is contact between rider and saddle.

Paying for quality

Our price point has been placed within the mid to upper range, and our customers testify that the price reflects the quality of the garments, and the manufacturing processes used. These are specialised sportingfabrics from Italy, using the highest grades of quality control, with 50 quality control measures between the start of manufacture to dispatch. You can’t put a price on comfort and a more effective partnership with the horse!

Our company has a successful distribution model with wholesalers, agents and retailers in scores of countries; orders come direct from our UK warehouse and we have a very swift and professional logistics team fulfilling trade and website orders.

Derriere is an award winning company - we were victorious in the 2016 Fedex Small Business Awards, were finalists in last year’s BETA Business Awards, and in 2014 won the coveted Spoga Horse Silver Innovation Award.

A revolution

We are so thrilled to be launch our Derriere DE SportiefBra at both trade shows - this is a ladies’ sports bra made from high-tech, breathable, temperature-regulating fabric that wicks away moisture, so please do come along and see why this attractive, empowering product is set to revolutionise the sports bra market! We are taking client account enquirers from all over the world, so do get in touch to to take some time to talk with the team if you’d like a personal showcase of our range.

Promoting male comfort in the saddle ~ Avoiding numb nuts!

Protecting the jewels in the crown!

It’s a sensitive subject so please excuse our bluntness. But men’s nether regions need to be protected! The crown jewels should not be subjected to bashing, crushing, jiggling or in fact any form of unnecessary movement - so for years, male horse riders have been using cycling shorts, swimming trunks and a-size-to-small briefs to keep their genitals snugly in place when riding.

This sensitive issue isn’t a new problem of course - just think of the thousands of cavalry officers in years gone by, who were in the saddle for hours! Apparently, savvy saddlers accounted for men’s downstairs appendages with innovations like the McClellan Military saddle, which was used from the late 1900s until World War II, and had a very deep seat with extra ‘space’ at the front. However, today’s mass-market saddles make no such deviations from the standard saddle seat shape.
Men have narrower seatbones than their female counterparts, as well as a smaller pelvic girdle and hip sockets. The ‘classical’ lengthened riding position is actually physiologically easier for men, as they can flatten their backs more when tilting their pelvis. However this does place them on the middle of their seatbones, and can cause potential issues caused by personal discomfort. The issues include pain in the seat bone area, soreness around the perineum, chafing in the inner thigh area and even infected hair follicles.

Cyclists have been wearing padded underwear for years, with many favouring the ‘snug and lifted’ preference that cycling underwear allows. However, it is only in recent years that male horse riders have had the opportunity to follow suit, with sport-specific briefs. Fortunately, Derriere Equestrian offers the Derriere Equestrian Seamless Shorty and the Derriere Equestrian Bonded Padded Shorty, to ensure male riders aren’t compromised in the saddle.

The Seamless Shorty is designed to eradicate seamlines visible through breeches, and ensure no rubbing, chaffing or abrasions are created due to stitched seams. Its cousin the Padded Shorty goes one step further with its additional Padded Support System that protects the perineal area from friction.

Customer Louis Richard used to get uncomfortable rubs and sores from breeches worn with normal briefs when riding, but says the Derriere Shorties have now revolutionised his comfort. “They are really comfy for me, and make the biggest difference,” he says.

The company’s Treviso Training Breeches and CannesCompetition Breeches add a further dimension of comfort to proceedings - the breeches work in harmony with the Derriere undergarments, ensuring all fabric surfaces come together in a symbiosis that completely eliminates chaffing, abrasions and discomfort. The fabrics and materials are the ultimate in equestrian riding apparel, blending Cotton, Microfibre and Elasthane for ultimate male comfort in the saddle.

International focus - Why fabulous Finnish riders favour our Derriere Equestrian foxy fashions

International focus - Why fabulous Finnish riders favour our foxy fashions

Derriere has a well-selected range of equestrian stores stocking our products internationally, boasting a growing team of esteemed and professional retailers that we work with all over be the world. ‘Just Dressage’ is a leading Finnish retailer of equestrian products, and a key international retailer of Derriere Equestrian’s revered under-garments.

We caught up with CEO Matilda Hyle, to find out why she loves the Derriere range:

DE - Our first question has to be - what is your best-selling Derriere Equestrian product at Just Dressage?

MH - It’s the Derriere Equestrian Performance Padded Panty! Our customers love the fact that it is designed to eradicate seam-lines - so there’s no rubbing, chaffing or abrasions for the wearer, due to stitched seams. Next would be the Derriere Equestrian Performance Padded Shorty - the design is beautiful, and combines the company’s bonded technology with the light seam stitch.

DE - Can you describe the equestrian marketplace in Finland?

MH - Horse owners in Finland are varied! They include mainly those who board their horses at bigger barns and stabling facilities. The people who keep their horses at home are a bit less common in our locality - however, we are located in Espoo, just 15kg from the capital city of Helsinki. Here, the land is expensive and most stables are located in the surrounding counties!

In Finland, riding is a growing sport, and most of the new riders in our country are adult amateurs. They’re looking maybe for a past-time that is relaxing and ‘outdoorsy’, and maybe to get in touch with nature through the horses, as an opposite to sitting at the office for hours on end, in their job! They love the Derriere range.

DE - What do you think are the main riding disciplines that your customers take part in?

“Customers come to us for quality products that support their riding aspirations, and work well for a fair price...”

MH - The customers that choose Derriere are mainly dressage and hobby riders; they tend to be not only people that own their own horse, but also those who lease a horse a couple of times a week, or who ride in riding schools. They come to us for quality products that support their riding aspirations, and work well for a fair price.
